Ethics in Clinical Research

Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), IIT Kharagpur  organized  a training programme on Ethics in Clinical Research - Schedule "Y" & Good Clinical Practice in association with Academy for Applied Research & Training in India, Kolkata (AARTH India) on Thursday, the 11th June, 2015 from 11.00 - 01.00 PM. This was followed by interactive session in the S.N. Bose Auditorium.

The program was inaugurated by Dean, SRIC. Following introductory note by Chairman, Institute Ethical Committee, two experts from School of Tropical Medicine took turn to explain why Ethics in Clinical Research is important and what is a good practice. The question answer session was very lively and the closure time was extended by one hour.

About 150 members from  faculty and research students of the Institute, who work / are expected to submit  research proposals involving human subjects,  attended the training program. The following three videos, available in our youtube channel www.youtube.com/user/IITKGPSRIC , dwell on the fundamental issues on this topic.

The Year It Was

We are now wrapping up the second edition of the IP Drive. The launch of the next edition of IP Drive is scheduled in July, 2015 when we regroup after summer break and there is infusion of new blood of UG / PG students. Presented below a summary of patents filed in this period. We received more than 100 invention disclosures of which 63 patents are filed / in the process of being filed. We can see from the pie chart that the interdisciplinary basket outnumbers others. In this, researchers of more than one Dept. /School / Centre come together for developing an innovative solution.

In parallel, with the help of our innovators, we are trying to give better visibility of these technologies - why they are better than competing technologies, how industry can benefit from it etc. through another student led initiative. In this, Technology Transfer Group (TTG) students with the help of IPR & IR office prepare content of this blog (Link). We are trying to populate it with more and more of our technologies and reach out to our target audience to effect technology transfer.

This edition of patent drive created useful resources which we share publicly for the benefit of not only our own researchers but all. The IP Drive workshop videos on basics of patenting, patent search, document preparation and interactive session with experts are available in our youtube channel www.youtube.com/user/IITKGPSRIC as a playlist which can be accessed by clicking following link.

The IP submission portal remains functional during the summer break and each submission will be duly evaluated, the pace may be little slower as it would be subjected to availability of concerned experts. The submission of Annexures at IPR & IR office and other activities will continue in full swing and will try to match our researchers use of the summer solitude in enhancing R&D output of their lab.s.

Finally, the IP activity of IIT Kharagpur drew attention of a leading magazine Career360 to have interview of PIC, IPR & IR in 'Expert Speak' column of the magazine's University Special edition (March, 2015).

Patent Drive Review Workshop

A Patent Drive review workshop was held on 28-01-2015 at S. N. Nose Auditorium, IIT Kharagpur during 6:00 - 9:00 PM. It was attended by about 200 research students and faculty.

Dean, Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), IIT Kharagpur in his inaugural speech explained the importance of patenting and shared the current status of patent drive. He and Professor-in-Charge, Intellectual Property Rights & Industrial Relations (IPR & IR) introduced key members of patent drive team - the faculty, staffs and Technology Transfer Group (TTG) student members. A short video of this speech can be found here (Link).

TTG representative then made a brief presentation of activities undertaken on patenting and technology promotion in recent time. This was followed by a presentation by Prof. Tapas Kumar Bandypadhyaya who is now taking a lead role in Patent Drive. He explained the basics of patenting in a lucid way. The 27 minute video of this talk can be found here (Link). One of the major component in any patent documentation is prior art search. Prof. M. Padmavati in her brief speech explained how to conduct patent search. She also emphasized how such search can help in defining any R&D problem. The 24 minute video of this talk can be found here (Link).

The second session of the workshop began after a short tea break. In this, first, one student who filed patent recently explained the process and how to get the documentation right quickly. Then one young faculty shared his experience of interaction with an industry where technology was transferred last year. A 21 minute video where these inventors share their experience can be found here (Link). Finally, there was lively interactive session where researchers cleared various queries from a panel of experts.

To follow up this patent drive workshop interaction, the following web form is prepared for our research community to help them in getting patents filed quickly.

We request our viewers to go through videos in the links provided here and in the youtube channel (Link). These and the 4 page note available here (Link) will reduce the processing time which is important in IP protection. Once ready, IITKGP research community is welcome to submit extended abstract of their invention through www.ipportal-iitkgp.in
